On January 18, 2023, 8th graders from Lorenzo De Zavala Middle School, Cesar Chavez Middle School, Dr. Javier Saenz Middle School, and Ann Richards Middle School came to visit La Joya High School. La Joya High School Principal Antonio Cano stated “This was an opportunity for incoming freshmen to gain valuable insight on what La Joya High School has to offer. Like I said, high school can be the best 4 years of your life but can also be the most boring 4 years of your life. it also depends on what they choose and there are plenty of options to have fun.” Raul Gonzalez, Chief of Police for La Joya ISD also stated “This is a transition phase for 8th grade. We want to let them know that we are waiting for them with open arms and we want for them to start thinking about all the positive things at the high schools and for them to be involved. The most important thing we want is for them to enjoy it and we will do everything in our part to ensure safety and protection and we don’t want them to stress and that the police department will always be enhancing the protection and security so they can focus on their education and all the extracurricular activities they want to be involved in.” Clubs and organizations had the opportunity to showcase their programs and what they have to offer at the high school level. The Band, Orchestra, Mariachi, Conjunto, Cheerleaders, Jewelettes and Folklorico ensembles performed for the visiting 8th grade students. Senior softball athlete representative Janelly Rodriguez said “We were interacting with kids to inform them about the skills they could learn at La Joya HS and how they could be the future of sports in their incoming high school years.” A BIG SHOUTOUT goes to the La Joya HS Counseling Staff for planning and hosting this event.
