students gather with gifts for the helping hands of hope event at La Joya HS

The Helping Hands of Hope is a service organized by the National Honor Society of La Joya High School. This year, a total of 12 families were chosen.  Each family was given gifts, clothing and daily necessities. Each homeroom classroom was provided a list of certain family members along with their needs and clothing sizes.  The event would not be successful without the supportive staff and students of LJHS. Assisting with item donations were organizations like STUCO, Leo Club, Mu Alpha Theta and SHPE.  LJHS Athletics Coaching Staff pitched in and helped donate heaters for the families.  Many  other gifts and clothing were gathered for the specific families. The items were individually wrapped and divided by the NHS organization along with the distribution of them to their respective families. The Helping Hands of Hope is an event that has been going on for over 30 years at La Joya HS. “Helping families in need made me feel honored.  I felt thankful for the opportunity to help others enjoy their holiday like I would with mine” said senior NHS member Raul Gonzalez. This year’s event was a huge success and the NHS organization is looking to continue to grow and improve the event in the coming years.
