Mission, TX - Palmview High School proudly honored members of its Class of 2026 who have committed to serving in the United States Armed Forces during a heartfelt Military Signing Day Ceremony held this week in the campus library.

Surrounded by family members, friends, educators, recruiters, and fellow students, seven graduating seniors were recognized for their decision to answer the call to serve their country through military enlistment - a commitment rooted in courage, sacrifice, leadership, and patriotism.

The ceremony celebrated students enlisting in the United States Marines, Navy, and Army, highlighting not only their military commitments, but also the determination, discipline, and perseverance that guided them throughout their educational journeys.A young woman in a red shirt and sash receives a certificate from a Marine in uniform.

For Palmview High School senior Reyna Pruneda, who officially signed with the United States Marines, the ceremony represented more than recognition - it represented validation for a path she says deserves equal respect and celebration.

“This ceremony means so much because students who choose military service are sometimes overlooked,” said Pruneda. “There’s often an expectation that success only looks like college, but serving your country is also an incredible path. Once I learned more about the Marines, I truly felt called to serve. I’m proud of the decision I’m making because it reflects who I am and what I want for my future.”

Military recruiters in attendance also emphasized the significance of honoring students who choose service after graduation.

“Choosing to serve in the military is one of the biggest commitments a young person can make,” said Sergeant Michael Salas, Marine Recruiter. “It takes courage, discipline, and a willingness to dedicate yourself to something bigger than yourself.”

The ceremony was organized by Palmview High School English Department Chair Sunni Miller, who wanted to ensure military-bound students received the same level of recognition often associated with athletic or academic signings.

“We proudly celebrate students who commit to athletics and higher education, and I believe military enlistment deserves that same level of recognition and appreciation,” said Miller. “These students are making a life-changing commitment to serve our country, and we wanted them to know how proud we are of their dedication and courage.”

The event also reflected La Joya ISD’s continued commitment to preparing empowered graduates ready to succeed in college, careers, military service, and beyond - a key focus outlined in the district’s Achieving Excellence Together: 2030 strategic vision.

By honoring multiple postsecondary pathways, La Joya ISD continues to foster a culture where every student’s goals, aspirations, and contributions are valued and celebrated. The ceremony served as a powerful reminder that leadership takes many forms - including the brave decision to serve and protect others.A group of students and adults stand in an auditorium, facing a color guard presenting flags.
